Saving face is important to Somalis, so indirectness and humor are often used in conversation. There are traditional gender roles in Somali culture­typically, men work and women stay home to raise children. Socially, men greet one another either verbally or by shaking hands, but eye or physical contact between men and women is avoided in public.
